Breaking Barriers: Cindy Costantino’s Inspiring Journey in Construction

In celebration of Women in Construction Week 2024, we are honored to spotlight an incredible woman who defied norms and blazed a trail in the construction industry. Meet Cindy Costantino, a proud member of LIUNA Local 1329.

Cindy’s story is one of triumph over adversity. At the age of 18, she stepped into a male-dominated field, a time when women in construction were a rare sight. Cindy dove headfirst into her career, fueled by a passion for the craft and a desire to create a secure future for her family.

Tragedy struck when Cindy lost her partner, leaving her to raise their three boys on her own. It was her construction career and the invaluable benefits provided by the labor union that became her pillars of support during this challenging period.

In an era where gender diversity in construction was still evolving, Cindy found solace and encouragement within the union. She recalls the early days when being a woman on the construction site was a rarity, but she felt the ongoing support from her union. “When you have a union, you have a family,” she affirms.

Cindy’s journey reflects the positive shift in the construction industry, as more women are now pursuing careers in this traditionally male-dominated industry. With her over 40 years as a Union construction worker, Cindy encourages aspiring women in construction, saying, “Don’t be afraid to break barriers. The union is a place where you’ll find support and encouragement to thrive.”

Today, Cindy stands shoulder to shoulder with her three sons who have followed in her footsteps as union tradesmen. This multigenerational commitment to the union illustrates the enduring impact of Cindy’s legacy. Her story exemplifies the transformative power of unions, not just as a workplace but as a community that nurtures and uplifts its members.

As we celebrate Women in Construction Week, let this journey inspire us all, especially the women considering a career in construction.

Thank you, Cindy, for reminding us that with determination, support, and a strong union, anything is possible.
