Candidate Questionnaire - Policy Positions

Responsible Contracting at the municipal level is the initiative to create a level playing field for contractors bidding on municipal construction contracts. The biggest aspect of this is adding criteria to the contract review process so as to allow for a more holistic evaluation of a contractor's bid - items such as a contractor's commitment to workplace safety, employee training, and community development would be considered. Would you support a Responsible Contracting Policy?(Required)

Our Union works closely with partners at the municipal level across our state, where our members build many of the city and county roads, water and sewer lines, and sidewalks. Currently, local governments are severely restricted from enacting sensible labor regulations on their own construction work by the Local Government Labor Regulatory Limitations Act (PA 105 of 2015) and the Fair and Open Competition in Government Act (PA Act 98 of 2011). If both of these laws are repealed, local governments could once again institute ordinances requiring Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) and prevailing wages on construction projects they fund. Would you support ordinances requiring PLAs and prevailing wages on local government construction work? Yes or no, with optional explanation.(Required)

LiUNA supports zoning regulations that make it easier to build denser and higher capacity housing units as a way to combat Michigan's affordable housing crisis as well as to create good paying jobs. Do you support changes to your local municipalities zoning regulations to make it easier to build denser housing developments? (Required)

Developers are eager to take advantage of a municipality's tax code to seek incentives in their projects. However, in some instances, contractors who earn tax breaks then provide substandard compensation to their workers. Will you fight to ensure that any developer/corporation seeking municipal tax incentives will create union jobs in your community?(Required)

Pipelines are the safest and most reliable way to transport liquids (Data from USDOT). Additionally, they provide our Members with good paying jobs and are crucial to the economies of many rural areas. Unfortunately, pipelines are often used as punching bags by partisan officials and organizations to score cheap political points. Do you support the construction, upkeep, and operation of Michigan’s many pipelines? Yes or no, with optional explanation.(Required)

Clean energy - like wind, nuclear, solar, and hydroelectric - not only helps maintain and improve Michigan’s environment, but also creates many good paying jobs that our Members depend on. If elected, will you support the funding of clean energy projects (wind and solar farms, dams, etc.) and support the necessary zoning/permitting changes for the projects to be built? In 2023, the Michigan Legislature repealed the so-called "Right to Work" law (PAs 8 and 9 of 2023) and reinstated the state's Prevailing Wage law (PA 10 of 2023). Will you stand up for and protect these crucial pro-worker laws? Yes or no, with optional explanation. Note: both of these items are regulated by the state legislature - LiUNA has a vested interest that all of the candidates we support agree with our overarching values.(Required)
